What is manual Osteopathic Therapy?

Overview

What is Manual Osteopathic Therapy?

Manual Osteopathic Therapy is a gentle, non-invasive form of manual therapy that focuses on improving your body’s overall health by working with the musculoskeletal system. Using a variety of specialized techniques, your therapist helps manipulate and strengthen the bones, muscles, and connective tissues to support better function across all body systems.

What Conditions Can Manual Osteopathic Therapy Help With?

Manual Osteopathic Therapy can relieve and manage a wide range of conditions, including but not limited to:

  • Headaches and Migraines

  • Anxiety and Depression

  • Vertigo

  • Neck and Back Pain

  • Frozen Shoulder

  • Rotator Cuff Injuries

  • Tennis Elbow

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Meniscus Tears

  • Pronator Teres Injury

  • Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

  • Iliotibial Band Syndrome

  • Piriformis Syndrome / Sciatica

  • Disc Herniation and Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD)

  • Dysmenorrhea

  • Plantar Fasciitis

  • Whiplash

  • Joint and spinal misalignments

Is Manual Osteopathic Therapy the Same as Massage?

No, Manual Osteopathic Therapy is not the same as massage therapy. Unlike massage, osteopathic treatment does not involve massaging the whole body. Instead, it focuses on the holistic balance and proper function of the body’s structure and systems.

How Does Manual Osteopathic Therapy Work?

Osteopathy treats the whole person—not just the symptoms. The goal is to restore balance and function within your body, allowing it to heal naturally. By working with the nervous, circulatory, and lymphatic systems, Manual Osteopathic Therapy helps improve your range of motion, reduce pain, and relieve discomfort.

Your therapist will conduct a thorough assessment to identify the root cause of your pain or dysfunction—not just the symptoms you feel.

Techniques Used in Manual Osteopathic Therapy

Your Manual Osteopathic Therapist may use a combination of the following techniques, tailored to your body’s specific needs:

  • Craniosacral Therapy: Gentle manipulation of the skull and spine to improve nervous system function.

  • Myofascial Remodeling: Releasing restrictions in the connective tissues to restore movement.

  • Visceral Manipulation: Gentle techniques to improve the function of internal organs.

  • Osteoarticulations: Mobilization and adjustment of joints and bones for proper alignment.

Each session is personalized, and your therapist will decide which techniques to use to best support your healing and wellness goals.

What to expect in manual osteopathic therapy session?

First-Time Clients: What to Expect for Your Initial Manual Osteopathic Therapy Session

If you’re new to Manual Osteopathic Therapy, please book an Initial Assessment & Treatment session.

During this session, our Manual Osteopathic Therapist will perform a thorough assessment that includes Range of Motion and Orthopedic Testing to evaluate your musculoskeletal system. You’ll also be asked about your health history, lifestyle, and pain levels. This helps us identify any underlying issues or barriers in your body contributing to your symptoms.

Based on this assessment, your therapist will develop a personalized treatment plan aimed at restoring balance and improving your overall health.

What Happens During Treatment?

After the assessment, treatment may involve a combination of:

  • Gentle movement and stretching

  • Targeted exercises

  • Palpation of muscles, tissues, and even internal organs

  • Low-velocity manipulations

Throughout your session, your comfort is our priority. Please feel free to communicate openly about your comfort levels so your therapist can adjust pressure and techniques accordingly.

What Should You Wear?

We recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement since treatment involves hands-on work with various parts of your body.

If you have any concerns or feel uncomfortable at any time, please don’t hesitate to let your therapist know.
